Production focusing on status symbols and luxury goods, on advertising and branding, while ignoring use-value spells death in an age of climate crisis. There are so many vital issues to be addressed--guaranteeing universal access to food, water, electricity, shelter, and transportation; combating rising tides and flooding; protecting ecology; and so on. We must prioritize the production of things necessary to respond to the crisis, not things whose worth resides only in their capacity to produce value. Slow Down by Kohei Saito

anaxa is actually such an incredibly deeply passionate lover (both in a romantic sense and his general care for others). he just doesn’t let himself ruminate on it for very long at all and deludes himself into thinking he is acting 100% out of reason whereas he’s actually such an emotionally motivated person; and when he cares about somebody, he cares with his whole heart and body and soul and whatever. he’s just very good at performing, so he fools everyone about that fact, including himself; he’s caught up in his own facade.

mitch jumping in to defend auston!!! do you remember the first time it happened? it's only my second season following the leafs so i don't know much about their rookie years
probably the first and most memorable time it happened was their rookie year (i was also not around during this time)... mitch jumped into a fight to defend auston against massive ass 6'4 rasmus ristolainen and tackled him lol... and then in the media afterward they were both extremely bashful about it. auston says mitch is an unbelievable teammate and one of his closest friends and he'd rather have been in the fight himself if he knew it was mitch that was getting in there. here's the video of it / here's a gifset of the fight itself / here's a gifset of their responses lol.... they have always been pretty hesitant to get into fights and scrums in general (i have a hypothesis abt them knowing they're much more valuable when they're nOT in the box or putting themselves in a position for potential injury), but the feistiest they get is definitely about each other specifically lol

thinking a lot tonight about my favorite hickey interpretation which is that he is essentially a failed religious fanatic. to Me it is so much more compelling if he genuinely reveres the tuunbaq. he doesn't want to dominate it, he wants to worship it, or exist alongside it. he is deep in delusion and truly believes he has a genuine connection to it. he thinks that if he sacrifices the remaining men he has under his control to it, the tuunbaq will accept him as a follower. he has always believed himself separate to britain and its empire, an exception to its corruption. he believes that using the imperialist system to get away from the imperialist nation he hates makes him different than those who use the imperialist system to carry out explicitly imperialist endeavors. he thinks his past actions are inconsequential, thinks his resentment exempts him, thinks denouncing britain and allowing the tuunbaq to kill his crew will win him the respect and acceptance of this godly creature. but it doesn't. he isn't different. the pain he has caused for his personal pursuits is just as damaging as pain caused for grander, imperial pursuits, and is in fact the same thing. he is just as much a force of destruction as anyone else, just as much a target of the tuunbaq's rath as anyone else. perhaps more than anyone else. he lived his life hating britain, yet he still exhausted his endless quest for connection and purpose within the british framework before looking outside of it. he thought crozier saw things the way he did, recognized the same things he did, and he played the imperialist game as he saw it to be (abusing native people), attempting to chase that connection. but when crozier came up lacking and he came up brutalized, he stopped trying to find it there. he thinks instead that the tuunbaq sees him, recognizes he is different in a way crozier never did, can give him the soul bonded Purpose that he so deeply craves. he is genuinely mystified by it, sees it as so much larger and holier than anything britain has ever offered, and thinks it respects him the same way he respects it. tuunbaq killing him is much the same as crozier lashing him. he committed acts of violence to appeal to both of them, thinking it would win him their respect and admiration, only to end up as a subject of their violence in return, because he isn't what they want and he is never able to truly connect with people in the way he wants

Another reason that Stansas hate the idea of Arya and Dany being friends (outside of them wanting to demonize Dany) is that they've convinced themselves that Dany and Sansa are the only main female characters, so if a Stark sister is going to have a significant relationship with Dany it has to be Sansa. Arya being constantly downplayed and treated like an accessory to Sansa has generally led to the consensus that her relationship with Dany will be defined by whatever Sansa's relationship (positive or negative) with her is. That's why Arya is always being left out of the "we were robbed of [x] female character friendship" conversations and why theories about Dany/Arya getting along are treated as Sansa hate; Arya, as a character, is seen as secondary to Sansa by a lot of people

I think my most toxic trait as a Zenos enjoyer is wanting to 1v1 everyone who says that Zenos actively wants to kill his opponents
Like, completely disregarding that it is actively ignoring the text even in StB there (and that he consistently wants the WoL especially to live), he, uh, is written as having a desire for more the opposite to happen. Very, very consistently. His drive to live is solely linked to brief moments of pleasure-from-struggle and when that drops he explicitly wants to die so he can preserve the moment (and like. *looks at the end of 6.0* if he wanted to kill the WoL he would not be disappointed when they fall before the game allows it, nor would they have lived after given his will was strong enough to bring them back if they bite it). He wants struggle and lacks the ability to give enough of a shit to hold back if someone walks up and says they're going to go for his head.
Like, death is a side effect of what he's after, it's not the goal and he explicitly considers it a waste of life. Even fighting isn't the goal, the goal is to struggle, to need to put effort in. The WoL is just the only person to put him in that state as he currently is, hence his obsession.

Like how did they even book a BBC1 radio show???? Like weren’t they basically nobodies back then??? I like can’t believe high execs looked at them and were like yeah why not
idk if this is a real question or a joke but real answer is the BBC wasn't getting the young people viewers and they knew vaguely of youtube and internet people so as a way to get the Youths interested they approached popular creators
and phil was kind of perfect for the 2011 christmas special radio pilot as he had experience hosting shows (like battlefronters, apartment red, sap) AND had done an unaired pilot radio show with someone else prior but it didn't get picked up. so he had experience in traditional media plus an editing degree so he could edit his own content. also they've talked about how their managers back them were really pushing for traditional media as that was all they really knew back then.
so phil got offered a trial run radio special and asked if his bestest buddy could be his co host and then a magic happened that even stuffy radio execs saw

Essential workers like care workers are currently forced to work long hours for low wages precisely because their work is helpful and considered to be a calling. Indeed, it's the fact that it's a calling that's being exploited. Furthermore, they are often held in contempt by administrators who create needless levels of supervision and regulation without actually helping anyone at all. Slow Down by Kohei Saito

My only take on the KHML news is that I'm really surprised they even tried to make another mobile game while UX was dying and DR didn't even get to finish properly, if I recall correctly? (Of course correct me if I'm wrong — my memory is hazy.) Obviously UX saw a decent amount of success for a while but I just don't think the odds were ever looking good for the future of another KH mobile game by the time it was announced.
I hope they put what they've accomplished so far into a new project, in whatever form. Because I really do want to see what they cooked up. But also Kingdom Hearts has been one of my favorite series for 20 years and I have to admit the mobile games era has not been my favorite. I love their stories, DR especially, but the storytelling always feels really limited by the mobile format.

btw. one observation about this environment (tumblr + fandom)
made so many casual friends and acquaintances after joining the Gladiator sandbox and without fail all of you are referring to us with plural they/them like regardless of whether this interaction happens in English or Finnish and I just want to say like.
Never felt this degree of unquestioning, casual, lovely and welcoming respect when it comes to this matter before like. You're all being so natural about it and no one's ever asked one thing or questioned how it should be done or anything it's like y'all just. Like it comes naturally and that's never been the case before and just. Nobody asked you to do this. Nobody expected you to do this. Nobody ever does it and even when we ask we expect that people just kind of forget it and don't do it more than once in a blue moon and give up on it in general and we never push because it must be weird and we understand that and just treating us like a person is enough,
and yet. Every time some new person comes to talk to us it's like they've known us for years and it's all regular and everyday to them.
byah. tearing up about this a little bit because the norm is that people snicker and cringe when you talk about DID or try to exist as a system that lives as multiple. You don't even know any of us by name and you still just default to "you (group)" and it's so. It's the nicest thing when we're used to constantly self-censoring and putting ourselves in the singular so as to not make people uncomfortable.
Love you all. You make us feel like a part of the team like it's nothing.

I've decided. I don't like the HTTYD movie sequels' xenophobia era. I don't think the themes should have gone that way.
#or isolationism or defeatism or segregation or valuing heteroamatonormativity and something uncomfortably close-#-to the Divine Right of Kings (or at least 'might makes right') above and beyond everything else.#I think it really undercut the first movie.#although in some awful way I guess it makes sense that they concluded by framing Hiccup and Toothless' relationship as -#-something bad that fundamentally 'needed' to end#because that relationship was the microcosm of growing out of the Othering and 'us vs them' mentality#and growing into a new era of progress and support and cultural exchange and compassion beyond your in-group#and the sequels no longer believe in any of those things.#I was originally way too lenient to HTTYD2 because I cared about the characters and story and really wanted to like it.#but also because it was an unfinished story and I used to have faith in the third one. before. you know.#I didn't want to believe that the message of HTTYD2 could have actually been that Hiccup should just believe his authorities#when they say that an othered enemy they don't really understand or know much about is just extremely dangerous#and will always go for the kill and cannot be reasoned with and war is the only option.#the narrative punishes Hiccup for NOT taking this for granted MUCH more harshly than HTTYD1 'punished' Stoick for the opposite.#(which isn't a criticism of HTTYD1 which actually treated the characters as well-meaning ppl with their own POVs-#-and actually let them learn and grow and put focus on portraying THAT.)#in the sequels the only ideas that get challenged are Hiccup's progressive push which just gets killed in the third.#so they can return to traditionalism. and this idea that everyone outside of Berk's homogenous in-group is irredeemably evil#(except Eret who kinda just stopped mattering and being his own character)#and because of all these Evil Foreigners. their unchallenged unique in-group just can't have nice things#so they just apply segregation and the dragons should Go Back Where They Came From and the humans stay on their new big rock#that looks like the physical manifestation of isolationism.#what was even the POINT of ANYTHING from the first movie anymore?#httyd criticism#httyd2 criticism#httyd3 criticism#thw criticism#thw negativity#httyd3 negativity#I don't think this is a very thematically coherent trilogy. they did a full 180° against the first movie.

I'm willing to at least hear out most of the "xyz plot point is heavily tied to abc cultural context" brands of posts but the "wwx isn't meant to be read as morally gray" and "the western fandom made up Sizhui being wangxian's son" brands of post make me feel like my cultural ignorance is being used to gaslight me
#mdzs#vent post#the filial piety stuff in relation to jgy is incredibly interesting and has influenced my opinion on him#being told about the whole mo dao vs gui dao thing was very helpful since that is completely lost in the english translation#whether or not wwx's self sacrificing tendencies are supposed to be a good thing is a conversation i find interesting#even though i haven't come to my own conclusion on it yet#but wwx not being morally gray??? bro was a major player in a war- no ones coming out of that spotless#i also just straight up don't trust y'all about what mxtx said on him being morally ideal#y'all take her words out of context or just straight up lie about what she said so often that#I can't take anything y'all “repeat” from her at face value. i need links to the sources before I'll believe anything#on Sizhui being wangxian's son:#thats so embedded in the text the only way I'd believe it wasn't the intended reading is if 7 seas straight up rewrote section of the books#because its more than just a few throw away lines and wwx calling him his little one#its sizhui being formally adopted into the lans (proven by the cloud pattern headband)#its the extra where they take him on a nighthunt/investigation without any of the other disciples#its the paying extra attention to his hw while doing the grading#its in the miscellaneous anecdotes Sizhui remembers from wwx even after he lost his memories from early childhood#its the baby stories and sizhui chewing on wwx's flute#its Sizhui's unconditional faith in the two of them#its in Sizhui's choosing the same instrument as lwj#that is their kid!!! not through modern western adoption but thats still their kid!!!#sizhui developing a close relationship with his uncle doesn't change that#Wen Ning is the cool untaking the lan babies on field trips. wangxian are the ones actually raising him#also mxtx has been pretty open about being influenced by things other than chinese classics#so using “well traditional Chinese story telling uses this convention” will never be automatically be the correct™️ take on her work#not to say her stories are completely devoid of traditional structures its just she mixes in other styles too
